Cap
The Au750 solid gold cap is hand-engraved with various details on different levels: a skull set with black sapphires breaking through the back of the cap, several iconic lines from Treasure Island, Stevenson's signature as well as the year '1889' in which he arrived at the port of Apia on the island of Upolo.
Top of the Cap
The emblem, made of Au750 solid gold, features 3D skull inspired by the flag of pirates. The mirror-inverted quote on the cap to ring UNDER THE WIDE AND STARRY SKY picks up on the theme of duality as depicted in Stevenson's novel 'Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde'.
Clip
The shape of the clip reminds of a belaying pin that is used to secure ropes and lines of running rigging on boats. Behind the clip is a stylized compass rose, based on the compass rose in Stevenson's drawing, and some of the lines representing the different wind directions.
Design
The overall design is inspired by a spyglass. Cap and barrel are made of Au750 solid gold with hand engravings, partly rhodium-coated and set with black sapphires. The structure of the barrel is inspired by wooden planks featuring the word WALRUS – the name of the ship of Captain Flint who hid the treasure – as well as a cut-out in the shape of the Samoan island Upolu featuring the corresponding GPS coordinates.
Cone
The cone is made of mahogany wood reminiscent of the giant tree under which the treasure was hidden on the island. The shape of the cone follows the overall shape of the design, with the bottom reminiscent of the opening of an old spyglass.
Feather
The Au750 solid gold nib is decorated with the word TUSITALA. The palm leaves depict his arrival to Samoa - his beloved Pacific island.
Limitation
The number 8 is considered a lucky number. It also reflects the regular pattern written in the nib atelier with every nib before it is released.
