In the rich history of rock music, few names have shone out as consistently as that of Queen. With a career spanning over five decades, the band is one of the world’s most successful of all time. During this period, Queen came to embody the power of musical creativity. They created their own musical universe, made up of a combination of hard rock, glam rock, pop, funk and opera, shattering the boundaries between the genres. Montblanc dedicates its Great Characters Homage to Queen Limited Edition 95 to these icons of rock music. Their appearance at the legendary 1985 Live Aid benefit concert in London is considered one of the greatest moments in the history of rock music. The six songs Queen played decorate the solid Au 750 signature gold skeleton overlay, contrasting with deep-black lacquer underneath: Bohemian Rhapsody, Radio Ga Ga, Hammer to Fall, Crazy Little Thing Called Love, We Will Rock You and the electrifying closing song We Are the Champions. The engraved pattern on the forepart is modelled on the stage design for that memorable concert. The only extravagant touch the frontman allowed himself, a studded armband and a matching belt, inspired the design of the cap and cone rings. A microphone stand inspired the design of the clip, representing Queen’s electrifying live performances. A crown – sometimes worn by Freddie Mercury during the closing rendition of God Save The Queen – was the inspiration behind the silhouette of the cap top. The design of the cone pays tribute, resembling the characteristic volume and tone control knobs of the electric guitar Brian May built himself. The drum pattern on the cone also honours founder member Roger Taylor, a brilliant drummer and composer. Four years after Freddie Mercury’s death, the original sound of his voice was heard again: the Made in Heaven album of 1995 included his final ever recording. The year of its release dictated the limited number of pieces, 95, while the LP cover – the silhouette of Freddie Mercury in one of his most iconic, triumphant stage poses – inspired the embossing on the handcrafted, bicolour, solid Au 750 gold nib.
