Acknowledging with respect the pioneering achievement of this distinguished and fascinating French artist, Montblanc has created the Masters of Art Homage to Henri Matisse Limited Edition 96. This edition commemorates Matisse's revolutionary approach to colour and form, most vividly expressed in his masterpiece, The Dance II from 1910. This artwork, with its sweeping contours and luminous fields of colour, captures the very essence of rhythm and movement, reflecting Matisse's belief in returning to pure colours and simplified shapes to create expressive compositions. The design of this limited edition directly mirrors this artistic philosophy. The cap and barrel feature artfully hand-applied vivid blue and turquoise lacquer, adorned with bronze dancers that encircle the writing instrument in a timeless choreography, directly inspired by the figures of The Dance II. Delicate engravings further accentuate the dancers' forms. The cap top displays a Montblanc emblem crafted from turquoise stone, framed by solid Au 750 gold, set against red jasper, a stone that also graces the base of the cone. The overall proportions of the pen are guided by the timeless aesthetic principle of the golden ratio, embodying harmony and beauty, while the generously rounded, almost sculptural shape of the cap pays homage to Matisse's diverse sculptural works. Further drawing inspiration from Matisse's innovative late-career 'gouaches découpées' or 'drawing with scissors,' the forepart features an engraving, and the rose-gold coated clip showcases an unusual design. The handcrafted, solid Au 750 gold nib is a marriage of nature and art, embossed with two botanical elements reminiscent of The Sheaf, while the interwoven letters ‘H’ and ‘m’ signify the great innovator of the Modernist age.
