Henri Matisse is a pivotal figure in the art world of the 20th century, whose revolutionary handling of artistic media helped set the tone for modern art. Acknowledging with respect the pioneering achievement of this distinguished and fascinating French artist, Montblanc has created the Masters of Art Homage to Henri Matisse Limited Edition 8. Matisse's work was characterized by his vibrant use of colour, a constant hallmark of his creativity. He sought to return to the basics of pure colours and radically simplified, often two-dimensional shapes to create expressive compositions, believing that art had lost much of its expressive power. This pursuit of essence is vividly captured in his 1937 masterpiece, Purple Robe and Anemones, which serves as the direct inspiration for this limited edition. In this painting, a female figure in a striking costume, set against a background of stripes, waves, dotted lines, and crosses, appears to float on the canvas, with a huge bouquet of flowers disrupting any conventional portrayal of the human form. The edition masterfully reinterprets this artwork in its overall design. Key elements from the painting and its spirited colour palette are artfully adapted on the solid Au 750 white gold cap and barrel, complemented by meticulously handcrafted enamel. Further elements from the painting are echoed in the 3D laser engravings on the lower barrel and cone, which feature the arabesque ornaments of Matisse's cherished flower table. The bouquet's green leaves and red blossoms are reflected in the design: a green jade stone graces the base of the cone, while a red carnelian adorns the cap, crowned with the Montblanc emblem rendered in pavé-set diamonds on solid Au 750 gold. Warm cognac-coloured diamonds gracefully encircle both the cap and the barrel. The proportions of the writing instrument are guided by the timeless aesthetic principle of the golden ratio, a "divine proportion" that embodies harmony and beauty. The generously rounded, almost sculptural shape of the cap is a direct allusion to the pronounced curves of many Matisse sculptures, celebrating the diversity of his artistic oeuvre. The edition also draws inspiration from Matisse's innovative late-career 'gouaches découpées' or 'drawing with scissors,' where he used coloured paper cut-outs to create vibrant compositions. This organic template is echoed in the engraving on the forepart and the unusual design of the gold-coated clip. The motif on the handcrafted, solid Au 750 gold nib, which is adorned with a brilliant-cut diamond, is an homage to Matisse's drawing Large Face (Mask), committed to paper with swift but assured brush lines.
