History

Cardinal Richelieu, Louis XIII's chief minister, is described as a prelate, displaying the order of the Saint-Esprit. Richelieu was a very extroverted person and liked to take center. This is why his portrait was designed as a relief in order to emphasize his person and character. Richelieu was also popular for his patronage of the arts: most notably, he founded the Académie française, the learned society responsible for matters pertaining to the French language.

The cap is made of of onyx and decorated with a solid gold intarsia portrait of Cardinal Richelieu. His collar is set with 35 diamonds (~0,15 ct.).
