Build a Set of Clues

Examine the design, filling system, material, inscriptions, clip, nib, and feed. Each element offers a potential range; the overlap of evidence produces a more reliable estimate.

Components may have been replaced during maintenance. A discrepancy does not make the piece fake, but it should be noted and investigated.

Use Comparable Sources

Historical catalogs, advertisements, specialized literature, and documented examples are useful sources. Always compare the same family and configuration.

Present the conclusion as a range when there is no definitive proof. Apparent precision does not replace evidence.
