A Historic Solution

In safety pens, the nib was retracted into the body before the cap was closed. The cap helped seal the ink reservoir, minimizing leaks during an era of still-evolving writing systems.

Operating the mechanism in the correct sequence is essential. Closing a pen with the nib exposed can cause immediate damage.

Collection and Preservation

Vintage examples may use ebonite, aged seals, and fragile components. Do not fill a newly acquired piece before proper evaluation.

Restoration should respect original construction and materials. Documentation and photographs prior to servicing preserve important information.
