The Meisterstück 149 is recognized by its substantial body, rounded ends, and large nib. Its presence is part of the proposition, but balance matters more than sheer size: without the cap, the body distributes weight comfortably for many hands.

It is not a universal choice. Those accustomed to fine instruments should try the grip section before purchasing. Ergonomics are personal, and prestige does not compensate for an uncomfortable pen.

The 149 uses a gold nib and a filling system designed to support consistent writing. The feel varies depending on nib width, adjustment, manufacturing era, ink, and paper; two units of the same reference can write in perceptibly different ways.

The filling is done via an integrated piston. Turning the rear cone moves the internal mechanism, allowing the pen to draw ink from the bottle. It is an elegant and capable system, but requires proper maintenance, especially in older examples.
