From extra fine to special formats, understand how pen, paper, ink, and hand determine the actual result of writing.

The letter in the pen is just the starting point
Indications such as EF, F, M, and B organize approximate widths, but they are not universal measurements. Pen manufacturing, adjustment, pressure, ink, and paper alter the perceived line.
A medium pen with fluid ink on absorbent paper can produce a wider line than expected. Whenever possible, test the combination you actually intend to use.
Choose based on your writing
Small letters and compact agendas tend to favor fine lines. Signatures, titles, and spaced writing allow exploring wide tips, which highlight ink color and shading.
Oblique tips and other special formats can add line variation, but they depend on the pen's rotation angle. They work best when combined with the natural writing gesture of the writer.
Adjustment comes before finalization
A misaligned, dry, or overly open pen does not represent the intended experience for that width. Before changing the size, confirm cleanliness, alignment, and flow.
Adjustments to the pen require technique. Avoid pressing or bending the tines to correct the line at home; a specialist can diagnose the cause without compromising a valuable piece.
